Scholars of Color- Breena Nuñez
What is Scholars of Color?
It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.
Let us now welcome Breena Nuñez to the Scholars of Color space!
Name: Breena Nuñez
Gender Pronouns: They/She
What do you currently do for work and/or school?: I'm a freelance cartoonist whose had experience teaching comics in after school programs in San Francisco, and right now I'm teaching Race & Comics at California College of the Arts and a Survey of Latina/o Images course at San Francisco State University.
Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: I think I would describe myself as a extroverted-introverted-nerdy AfroCentral American who doesn't take themselves too seriously, but is very prone to experiencing moments of insecurity/self-doubt.
What are you passionate about?: I'm passionate about using comics as a way to validate Afrodescendants from the diaspora and to also remind people of all ages that you are capable of creating comics. Despite my comics scholarship, I truly believe you don't need to study art or literature to be a cartoonist because I think I received some of the most valuable education just by reading comics on my own accord and finding my voice by being patient with my process, and also using other forms of art and literature to influence the way I shape my style of storytelling.
Why is the representation of scholars of color important to you?: I think it's important for us to remember that scholars have always come before us, and that young folks are looking for BIPOC educators who carry knowledge with sensitivity and tenderness that may also combat against the norms of a colonialist curriculum.
If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?: Through my email breenache@gmail.com, DMs via IG and Twitter are ok (@breenache) but I'm not always responsive because I get burnt out every now and then with adjusting to teaching online.
Anything else you would like us to know?: I'm a musician as well, although nowadays I've been playing the flute for myself as a way to balance my breathing and to use another outlet to express my emotions without needing to write or draw them out.
Thank you Breena for sharing space with us!
