What is Scholars of Color?

It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

What do you currently do for work and/or school?: Program Coordinator and Psychotherapist

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: Community Activist, Youth & Immigrant Advocate, Researcher, & Scholar

What are you passionate about?: My passion lies within the Black and Brown/Immigrant communities and advocating for services and resources to ensure they have access to needs and care. My work focuses on juvenile and restorative justice, gang and community violence intervention and prevention, immigrant resources and advocacy, and mental health/behavioral health care for English and Spanish speaking community members.

Why is the representation of scholars of color important to you?: Representing Scholars of Color shines light on members in the community, such as myself, in suburban communities were community oppression and discrimination have been prevalant like my home region, Long Island, NY, are present within the community and provide mental health and community-based services for folks who face barriers, such as race and language, in the community.

Anything else you would like us to know?: I am a New York State Licensed Social Worker (LMSW) currently holding the role as a Bilingual Social Worker/Program Coordinator for the Community Partnership Program, a partnership between Family and Children's Association and the Nassau County District Attorney's Office in Nassau County, Long Island, NY) and a Psychotherapist with the Mental Health Providers of Western Queens: Western Queens Consultation Center in Sunnyside, Queens, New York City.
