Scholars of Color- Francisco Escobar
What is Scholars of Color?
It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.
Let us now welcome Francisco Escobar to the Scholars of Color Space!
Name: FRANCISCO ESCOBAR
Gender Pronouns: He/Him/His
What do you currently do for work and/or school?: DOE NYC Public Schools - Mathematics
Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: A human being, questioner, and someone who is trying to understand the world and find ways to act upon it.
What are you passionate about?: I am passionate about learning about the diversity of Indigenous knowledge, engaging in mathematics as a human behavior with Pan-Americanism and Hip Hop being at the core of said passion. Each has been and still is a significant influence of the person who I am and how I think of the Universe around us.
Why is the representation of scholars of color important to you?: From my experience, “The Ivory Tower of Academia” can be a very lonely place. Your thoughts, passions, and scholarly work can be overlooked and under appreciated for not being “traditional enough”. When I see, whether through direct experiences or even at a distance, Scholars of Color such as: William Garcia, Mario Benabe, Carlos Collado, Ximena Ospina, Esteban Acosta, Christina Chaise, Karen Guzman, Terrell Romeo, Xavier Buck, Juan Manuel Calero Canaval, and Chris Montana doing great work exceeding “traditional school of thought” and developing their own at high levels, pushes me in improving my own scholarly work. Not to mention the countless Scholars of Color who I have had the honor to learn and teach from at least 1 hour a day. I am truly humbled that we have shared the same space even if it was a moment in our lifelong journey of truth, justice, and the infinite search for knowledge.
If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?: My email is Francisco.educator.escobar@gmail.com and my Instagram is @_Yatichiri
Anything else you would like us to know?: In the field of Academia, I hope as Scholars of Color, we, in solidarity, would be able to finance and build our own Academic Institutions where diversity is at the core, not the outer realm.
Thank you Francisco for sharing space with us!
