What is Scholars of Color?

It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

Let us now welcome Ian Lee to the Scholars of Color space!

Name: Ian Lee

Gender Pronouns: he/him

What do you currently do for work and/or school?: I am an External Organizer with SEIU Local 1021. I am also a Videographer/Photographer with my side-business Jolie Media.

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: I guess I'd call myself a communicator and empower-er. Also I love deep conversation, philosophy, art, and bagels.

What are you passionate about?: Bagels. Also, at my core I'm an organizer. I develop worker leaders to create power and run strategic campaigns. That's the thing I've devoted my entire adult life to. And I would say it's a "passion" in the deepest sense of the word. Career organizing can be rough at times, but at the end of the day it provides me profound meaning. I've actually maintained a blog over the last five years about my organizing experiences and my ever developing philosophies on organizing. And while you can only truly get to know people through in-person conversations, absent that, my organizing blog pretty much gets to the core of who I am haha.

Why is the representation of scholars of color important to you?: People of color need to lift one another up.

If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?: All my links can be found here: http://linktr.ee/ianjolie/

Anything else you would like us to know?: Mostly as a way to balance the edge of my hyper-social career, and also as an excuse to make art, I created a Videography/Photography side-business called Jolie Media. I take photos and make films for organizations advancing justice and equity throughout the Sacramento region. I think I'm pretty good at it, and I get better with more practice. Anyway don't hesitate to reach out if there's a project I can help you with.

Thank you Ian for sharing space with us!

Stay tuned everyone for more Scholars of Color profiles. Interested in being showcased yourself? Please email the Scholars of Color team at scholarsofcolor@reclaimingyourhappiness.com and we will get back to you shortly.
