What is Scholars of Color?

It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

Let us now welcome Elvira Garcia to the Scholars of Color space!

Name: Elvira Garcia

Location: New York

Gender Pronouns: she/her/ella

What's your current occupation? (i.e. Student, Scientist, Coach, In transition, etc.): Graduate Student

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: Chicana, first-generation college student, sister, prima (cousin), mentor, educator, change maker, avid reader, and enthusiastic traveler

What are you passionate about?: Uplifting, cheering, and supporting students in their higher education journey.

What does the representation of Scholars of Color mean to you?: ¡Si, se puede! (English Translation: Yes, We Can!) My mom used to tell me this quote growing up when there were challenges and felt hopeless. However, once I would hear her tell me this quote I knew I could overcome any obstacle. For many of us we have and continue to overcome many obstacles to get to our end goal. Whether it’s being the first in our family to navigate higher education or dealing with imposter syndrome. Despite of all the challenges, we are here because of our hard work and our community who rooted for us. Now we are sharing our stories to provide motivation and remind folks what ¡Si se Puede! (Yes, it is possible!)

If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?:  Follow me on @highereducation_hermana and email me at higheredhermana1@gmail.com.

Anything else you would like us to know?: I am using my platform to highlight my graduate school journey because I graduated from my undergraduate studies in 2020. In addition, I applied twice to graduate school and sharing my lived experience on what I learned the second time around.

Thank you Elvira for sharing space with us!

Stay tuned everyone for more Scholars of Color profiles. Interested in being showcased yourself? Please email the Scholars of Color team at scholarsofcolor@reclaimingyourhappiness.com and we will get back to you shortly.
