What is Scholars of Color?

It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

Let us now welcome Giuliani Alvarenga to the Scholars of Color space!

Name: Giuliani Alvarenga

Gender Pronouns: They/He

What do you currently do for work and/or school?: I am a law student and a journalist for a publication focused on public health

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: Passionate, loyal, real, SalvadoReina.

What are you passionate about?: I am passionate about dismantling ICE and detention centers. I advocate for people living with HIV and I want to eradicate HIV stigma.

Why is the representation of scholars of color important to you?: It’s important to talk about how these social issues affect all of us. For example, HIV is something we all should be fighting to end. This stigma carries over with other health concerns and we see that will what’s happening with COVID-19.

If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?: Yes on IG @princeofviana

Anything else you would like us to know?: I am an interdisciplinary practitioner who believes that praxis and movement lawyering comes before theory. With that said, I am also enrolling in a PhD program focused on Public Health and immigration law. It’s important to build community and pipelines that work to empower our people. I hope my JD/ PhD can serve as that. For example, this summer I was in Tijuana doing immigration work with LGBT Central Americans. I was able to collaborate with Ruby Corado (ED for Casa Ruby). She is building a house for LGBT migrants so that they can be released from detention faster once the judge realizes they have a great organization serving as a sponsor. I wanted to make sure that after my internship was over people I had a solid pipeline to help asylum seekers get out of detention faster, especially if they didn’t have support (not many LGBT asylum seekers have that family support). It’s important for me to create and build relationships to create impact.

Thank you Giuliani for sharing space with us!
