What is Scholars of Color?

It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

Let us now welcome Kathleen Carbajal to the Scholars of Color Space!

Name: Kathleen Carbajal

Gender Pronouns: She/Her

What do you currently do for work and/or school?: I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations. I work at an English Language Center in Lima, Peru. I teach students English as a Foreign Language. I advocate for gender equality and integrate it in my lesson plans.

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: I’m spiritual and a strong believer in Astrology, so as a Sagittarius sun and Aries Moon I am outspoken, driven, love to learn about cultures, countries and history. I tend to be impulsive when I see any type of disrespect towards anyone, but I’m taking a Yoga class now which has helped me be at ease. I love to make people laugh, even if it makes me look goofy which I genuinely am.

What are you passionate about?: I’m passionate about gender equality and quality education for all. Living in Peru has taught me how much necessity exists. It’s a privilege to have an education when it should be a basic right for everyone. The lack of education leads to a major lack of equality.

Why is the representation of scholars of color important to you?: As a first generation Latina, I valued my cultural background because my parents were proud Peruvians who taught me about my culture. My teachers were usually white women who thought Peru was part of Mexico. In 3rd grade, I became a Spanish to English translator for a boy whose family immigrated from Mexico. I didn’t know how valuable it was at that moment but looking back now, I reflect on how important it is to be represented and communicate freely. Scholars of Color help people who pursue an education but sometimes fear they won’t be able to achieve it because of the lack of representation. It’s important for us to support and encourage students and colleagues in order to achieve their goals, as well as help our communities.

If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?: You can get in touch with me via Instagram @katpriscilla LinkedIn: Kathy Carbajal Mezarina or email: kapricarmez@gmail.com

Anything else you would like us to know?: I have been accepted to The Youth Assembly in Washington D.C. held in August, advocating for Gender Equality, Quality Education, and Reduced Inequalities as a Peruvian delegate focusing on topics like Feminism, violence against women, and femicide.

Thank you Kathleen for sharing space with us!
