Name: Ranulfo Molina
Gender Pronouns: Cis Male He/Him/His
What do you currently do for work and/or school?: I am currently working in teaching fellowship for Foundation for Academics Evendors. The mission of the Foundation for Academic Endeavors is to provide empowering educational experiences for low-income children and families and to build a community that realizes its full potential supported by a network that encourages leadership and lifelong learning. I just recently was told I was chosen for a year-long internship position teaching English to young adults wanting to take the GED (General Education Diploma) test. Newly graduated from Skagit Valley College with an Associates in Arts Degree. I have been admitted into Western Washington University, declared the English major with an emphasis in Creative Writing and a minor in Education and Social Justice. First-generation college student, making Ma’ma proud!
Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: I would describe myself as a beautiful brown man who is leading in this “Professional” world. I am the spirits of my mother migrating over to the USA in search of a better quality of life. I am the representation of an “American dream” my mother had thought of when she walked from Guatemala to Washington state. I am the oldest of three leading the pack. I am lighting and thunder from the rainforests of Guatemala! I have the killer instinct inherited by white men in America. Though I choose to speak up for what is true use my words and publications as my weapon and not a legal load gun. See me? I am me! I acknowledge every aspect of myself.
What are you passionate about?: I am passionate about education. I grew up in a low-income family; my mom would often remind me that school was everything and essential for my success. She would say that she loved going to school but had to quit in 2nd grade to help her family with money. Her story of selling slices of watermelon in the street of Esquila, Guatemala was what fueled my desire to push my educational agenda. I plan to open up a scholarship fund for students in Guatemala who want to pursue education but can’t because of economic instability. I would name it La Beca de Zoila Elisa Canté in honor of my mother for moving the skies and seas to see her children shine. Te amo mamá!
Why is the representation of scholars of color important to you?: I want to thank Michael Lemus for creating such a powerful brand and for allowing me to share my story. Scholars of Color is essential to have because people of color are often pushed aside when we speak of them in academia. Many of us Scholars of Color are excelling in an academic system that was not intended for students of color. We need to celebrate that! For everyone scholar of color finishing up those high school diploma to getting their doctorate! In every facet of the academic journey, every accomplishment is a milestone.
