What is Scholars of Color?

It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

Let us now welcome Acacia Kapusta to the Scholars of Color Space!

Name: Acacia Kapusta

Gender Pronouns: She/her/hers

What do you currently do for work and/or school?: Intersectional Consultant, Activist, Educator.

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: Silly, down-to-earth, empathetic, outspoken, an advocate, disabled, proud, life-loving, barrier-breaking, expectation-surpassing, caring, thoughtful, and lighthearted

What are you passionate about?: I'm passionate about so many things, both meaningful and less so. I'm passionate about food, cooking, and flavors. I'm passionate about advocacy for all underrepresented and oppressed populations of people, especially the disability community. I'm also passionate about my multicultural and multi-ethnic background, and finding ways to explore and represent these many influences that have informed who I am. I'm also VERY passionate about cats, especially my two little monsters.

Why is the representation of scholars of color important to you?: The representation of scholars of color, especially those with a number of impacted identities, is important to me because it is clear that a "post-racial" society isn't even close to being realized in the US. People of color, women, disabled and neurodiverse folks, LGBTQ+ folks, formerly incarcerated folks, undocumented folks, ESL folks, foster and former foster folks, and so many more equally important groups of people in the US are still not being treated equitably, not being provided their necessary resources, still being neglected and murdered, still being sterilized and euthanized. Most importantly, though, most of us still don't hear a title that holds any degree of power or influence and immediately think of someone who looks like us.

If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?: Facebook: Acacia Kapusta; Email: acacia.kapusta@wsu.edu

Anything else you would like us to know?: My favorite word is tattooed on my wrist: "fortitude"

Thank you Acacia for sharing space with us!
