It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.
Let us now welcome Brandon Ruiz-Peña to the Scholars of Color space!
Name: Brandon Ruiz-Peña
Location: Houston, Texas
Gender Pronouns: He/Him/His
What's your current occupation? (i.e. Student, Scientist, Coach, In transition, etc.): Teacher
Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: I would describe myself as someone who is consistently working to make the world a little bit brighter. Whether it is in the classroom or beyond the walls of my campus, my goal is always to spread positivity and kindness. I’m someone who has a strong faith and loves his family. As the first in my family to earn a bachelor's degree (in Communication) and a master's degree (in Digital Media), I am someone who is determined and hardworking.
What are you passionate about?: I am passionate about ensuring all students receive quality education no matter their environment. My goal is to uplift and motivate my students to strive for more than they may think capable of. Additionally, I am passionate about ensuring students of color and LGBTQ+ students feel empowered to embrace their uniqueness, respect themselves and others, and know they bring value to every table they sit at.
What does the representation of Scholars of Color mean to you?: Scholars of Color invites everyone to the table with the understanding that though we may differ in our backgrounds, we share a common belief that representation matters. It’s the notion that seeing others who look like us, that have been in the same spaces and endured similar struggles, can provide not only a sense of comfort but also hope. I am honored to be among the many featured on this platform. Being a proud, outspoken gay Latino in a world that is constantly reminding us of how far there is still to go, this platform provides a way to establish community.
If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?: Lately, I am mostly known as a Tik Tok Teacher! You can find me on Tik Tok (@TheMr.Pena) and also on Instagram (@TheMr.Pena).
Anything else you would like us to know?: You may be the first to do something. You may be the only one in a room that looks like you. You may feel awkward and uncomfortable as you step out into a world that can feel harsh at times. But stay present because you bring experience that no one else has and have a voice far more important than you may believe. Above all, keep shining!
Thank you Brandon for sharing space with us!
