Scholars of Color- Mary Dueñas
What is Scholars of Color?
It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.
Let us now welcome Mary Dueñas to the Scholars of Color space!
Name: Mary Dueñas
Location: Knoxville, Tennesse
Gender Pronouns: she/her/ella
What's your current occupation? (i.e. Student, Scientist, Coach, In transition, etc.): Assistant Professor and College Student Personnel Program Coordinator at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: I am an educator and advocate to help others succeed. I love family-centered activities while also being focused on my career. I love listening to podcasts or audiobooks as I get ready in the morning and love having a routine. I am also selfishly committed to loving life.
What are you passionate about?: I am committed to creating pathways for marginalized students in higher education and elevating Latinx college students' voices. My parents worked tirelessly to provide an education to my sister and me, and I now have the platform to help other students live by myself. I coordinate the master's program, and it's super exciting to work with folks committed to changing the landscape of student affairs.
What does the representation of Scholars of Color mean to you?: It means working together to lift each other, connecting to create a better world and space for each other and the next generation. Life is better when we work together and intentionally work towards a greater purpose. Representation of scholars of color means seeing other folks in those spaces or settings look like you. It means encouragement, motivation, and commitment!
If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?: We can connect via instagram @marycduenas!
Anything else you would like us to know?: I consider both northern and southern CA home, lived several years in the midwest, and now live in the Southeast. Culture is different between these places, and if I can support your success in any way, shape, or form, I am happy to do what I can! Titles don’t mean anything unless they are for good use, and I use my title(s) to help others. I am happy for these platforms, as it creates visibility for individuals like you and me. :)
Thank you Mary for sharing space with us!
