Scholars of Color- Nathalie Nguyen Gayton
What is Scholars of Color?
It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.
Let us now welcome Nathalie Nguyen Gayton to the Scholars of Color Space!
Name: Nathalie Nguyen Gayton
Gender Pronouns: She/Her/Hers
What do you currently do for work and/or school?: Attorney for California Department of State Hospitals
Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: Boss. Bad Bitch. Advocate. Friend. Leader. Warrior. Soul Searcher. Mentor. Influencer. Hustler.
What are you passionate about?: I am passionate about making the world a better place for ALL people.
Why is the representation of scholars of color important to you?: When I tell people that I am a daughter of immigrants, a first generation Asian American, woman, and someone of color, I often receive the same reactions. I have been told countless times that life must have been hard and that I got so lucky to get here. And although that may be true, my story nonetheless should not be discounted. I believe it's important for people of color to finally share, express, and say out loud the narratives that have defined and contributed to their legacies and sacrifices. There are countless times that non-people of color claim they know our stories and have rewritten the narratives for us all while justifying them. In empowering people of color, we are paving the pathway for others and future generations to share their stories. Now has never been a better time.
If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?: Everyone from all walks of life can reach me on all social media platforms, email me at nguyen.nathalie.p@gmail.com, or find me on Linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/nathaliepnguyen.
Anything else you would like us to know?: I was born and raised in the Bay Area and have been a 5-year resident of Sacramento. I grew up in a non-English speaking household and did not learn the language until I was enrolled into school. I consider myself to be fortunate having still retained my native languages in both reading and writing now that I am older. I received my undergraduate degree at San Francisco State and my master's degree from the University of San Francisco. I am currently a law student and set to take the bar in July 2020 (please wish me luck). In my little to no spare time, I love to hang out with my chihuahua, watch cooking shows, and travel the world. I am so happy to be apart of this network and I'm always happy to meet new friends!
Thank you Nathalie for sharing space with us!
