What is Scholars of Color?

It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

Let us now welcome Sandra Villacorta to the Scholars of Color space!

Name: Sandra Villacorta

Location:  Los Angeles, CA

Gender Pronouns: She/her and They/them

What's your current occupation? (i.e. Student, Scientist, Coach, In transition, etc.): Graduate student, Doctoral Candidate in Clinical Psychology

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: I am a Salvadoran American person who would describe themselves as resourceful, creative and funny. My professional passions include Latine mental health, LGBTQIA+ affirming care and research. When not studying, I love spending time in spiritual and grounding practices, reading books, and listening to mostly goth music.

What are you passionate about?: I am passionate about decreasing the mental health stigma within the Latina/o/x/e community, creating safe and gender affirming spaces for Latine and LGBTQIA+ people and increasing the representation within the psychology field as a queer, Latine future psychologist. As a first generation student, I am also passionate about discussing barriers to higher education as my journey to graduate school has not been easy.

What does the representation of Scholars of Color mean to you?: It is crucial to create representation for BIPOC communities and to uplift and empower voices within professional and academic spaces. I have witnessed the strength and knowledge of clients who identify as BIPOC, queer, or first-gen and I believe that we can create a space of love, empowerment, and success.

If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?:  My email is sandvill10265@msmu.edu. You can also follow me on TikTok @thegothpsyd.

Anything else you would like us to know?: I am open to connecting with prospective students or therapists about the educational and professional journey. I share mental health information and educational information on my TikTok @thegothpsyd

Thank you Sandra for sharing space with us!
