Scholars of Color- Sarah Scruggs

What is Scholars of Color?

It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

Let us now welcome Sarah Scruggs to the Scholars of Color space!

Name: Sarah Scruggs

Location: Albuquerque, NM

Gender Pronouns: she/her

What's your current occupation? (i.e. Student, Scientist, Coach, In transition, etc.): National Park Service fellow

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: I would describe myself as caring, adventurous, and friendly.

What are you passionate about?: I'm passionate about opening doors for other marginalized folks and pulling as many people through with me! Professionally, I'm in the historic preservation field within the National Park Service which is a very white dominated space. I'm still early in my career but I know that my Big Goal is to bring more Black and brown folks, LGBTQIA+ people, everyone else who hasn't been represented to the table. Another huge part of my life revolves around The Outside which is yet another very white space (although I see many others out here doing the Good Work!). Whenever I get outside I do my best to make sure the community is represented whether it's just me by myself or if I'm with a group of other women, BIPOC or queer folx showing up and showing out. Overall I'm very passionate about increasing safe and accessible spaces for people who haven't had those opportunities before.

What does the representation of Scholars of Color mean to you?: It means that there is yet another way for all the scholars out there to be seen and see themselves reflected in others and hopefully find a sense of community and belonging here.

If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?:  You can find me at @shetrailready on Instagram!

Anything else you would like us to know?: I love sharing how diverse and enjoyable the outdoor world can be so if anyone is looking for tips on how or where to get into the outdoors, send me a message! Or if there are any questions about working with/for the NPS, I'd be happy to share any knowledge I may have. Let's chat :)

Thank you Sarah for sharing space with us!

Stay tuned everyone for more Scholars of Color profiles. Interested in being showcased yourself? Please email the Scholars of Color team at scholarsofcolor@reclaimingyourhappiness.com and we will get back to you shortly.
