What is Scholars of Color?

It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

Let us now welcome Miko Brown to the Scholars of Color space!

Name: Miko Brown

Location: Sacramento, CA

Gender Pronouns: Miko/Miko's

What's your current occupation? (i.e. Student, Scientist, Coach, In transition, etc.): Director of Social Justice Initiatives at a nonprofit

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: I am someone who lives from a deep awareness of our inextricable interconnectedness with all life and all things. From that awareness, I endeavor to always be mindful of the ripple effects of what I do and do not do and aspire to contribute to that which supports our collective well-being. I work within vegan food justice and the farm animal sanctuary movement and strive to cultivate communities committed to a racially just and equitable food system and world rooted in collective care for fellow animals, humans, and the planet. I understand myself as carrying forward the legacy of queer, Black, and gender-expansive forebears who were committed to radical care and justice for our communities. I often reflect on a quote from the book “Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Frontlines” that says “The queer thing is that we are still here…’mothering’ is a queer thing. Not just when people who do not identify as heterosexual give birth to or adopt children and parent them, but all day long and everywhere when we acknowledge the creative power of transforming ourselves, and the ways we relate to each other. Because we were never meant to survive and here we are creating a world full of love.” I am someone who hopes to carry forward that legacy of revolutionary mothering not just as a way of parenting but as a way of being in community and movements — embodying the commitment to collective care and justice that our ancestors demonstrated during different times, in various roles, and across gender and species.

What are you passionate about?: I feel passionate about strengthening our capacity for generative and supportive coalition- building across movements; ensuring the nourishment of our communities and the freedom to make food choices that align with our well-being and values; realizing the potential of a food system and world that contributes to the thriving of our shared ecosystem and communities rather than their destruction and exploitation; and establishing communities of counter-oppressive practice and care, inclusive of fellow animals, humans, and the planet.

What does the representation of Scholars of Color mean to you?: The representation of scholars of color is so powerful in that it gives us examples of what is possible through what others in our shared community are doing. Being able to see those possibilities represented and realized is what inspires us, motivates us, and fuels our dreams. I remember the people I have encountered on my journey whose existence gave me a new and hopeful sense of what is possible. I also remember and cherish those who I have encountered who have told me how my presence has been an example for them. Us seeing each other and being represented are what help us to keep going, knowing that we are not alone, and that we are — in fact — part of a vast and mighty community and team that spans generations.

If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?:  People interested in connect with me can get in touch via LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/miko-k-brown.
