Name: Sergio A. Gonzalez
Location: The Bay Area - Nor Cal
Gender Pronouns: él/he/him
What's your current occupation? (i.e. Student, Scientist, Coach, In transition, etc.): PhD Candidate
Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: I'm a pisces with a pedagogy of love, joto (queer), Latinx, feminist, first gen academic, neurodivergent (ADHD, Generalized Anxiety) and a sCHOLAr - Activist.
What are you passionate about?: Disrupting this traditional notion of higher education through a Jotería pedagogy. As I navigate higher education or what I like to call, the ivory tower, I think it's important to show up unapologetically and wholeheartedly as yourself, the good, the bad, but most of all, the messy. For me, this comes about in the ways that I honor myself and unlearn that we (queer folx of color) don't belong in historically white and heteronormative spaces known as academia.
What does the representation of Scholars of Color mean to you?: Representation of scholars of color in academia is crucial, especially in this day and age. In my academic upbringing, I remember having very few profes I could relate to, connect with, and see myself as. Representation matters and having many more scholars of color in these white spaces have the power to positively impact a culture of belonging for many students of color who feel that they don't belong.
If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?: Please check out my linktree: https://linktr.ee/SAGonzalez, where you can find links to my twitter, linkedin, email, website, published work etc.
Anything else you would like us to know?:I wouldn't be here today doing what I love with the people that I love if it wasn't for the love and guidance of my comunidad and my ancestors. I love you Cukis (grandma) and Tito (grandpa); I think about you every day and can feel your love as I navigate this place I call #cacademia.
Thank you Sergio for sharing space with us!
