What is Scholars of Color?

It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

Let us now welcome Coley Carman to the Scholars of Color space!

Name: Coley Carman

Gender Pronouns: He/Him/His

What do you currently do for work and/or school?: I am currently a graduating senior at Sacramento State with a major in Kinesiology and a minor in Psychology. I am currently a Youth mentor at Sacramento City Unified School District. I primarily work with high school seniors to aid with career and college preparation.

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: Ambitious, authentic, intelligent, loving, influential, dynamic, impactful, independent, creative, responsible, purpose driven

What are you passionate about?: I am passionate about performing spoken word and motivational speaking. I am also passionate about mentoring the youth and being a catalyst for their growth.

Why is the representation of scholars of color important to you?: The representation of scholars of color is important for me because it is important for people to see individuals who look like them. To see someone like me succeeding in education shows me that it is possible for me to do the same. Black men often only see representations of success in the form of rappers, ball players or drug dealers; scholars are not often in the picture. Therefore, it is important highlight Black scholars who have attained success by taking avenues other than the stereotypes. This representation challenges the narrative and opens doors for other possibilities.

If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?: People can connect with me via instagram @thiscoleysworld

Anything else you would like us to know?: My 3 core values are authenticity, honor and legacy, in that specific order. I believe one must live their life authentically first which means to live your story unapologetically. Honor means to respect who and what came before you by advancing paths that have already been paved or creating new ones. Legacy is to leave something behind that can be continued long after you are gone.

Thank you Coley for sharing space with us!
