Scholars of Color- Jen Fry

What is Scholars of Color?

It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

Let us now welcome Jen Fry to the Scholars of Color space!

Name: Jen Fry

Gender Pronouns: She/her/hers

What do you currently do for work and/or school?: I own JenFryTalks which is a social justice firm that focuses on educating and empowering those within athletics through an anti-racist lens and I am a PhD student in Geography at Michigan State University

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: A radical globetrotter who is trying to change the face of how we talk about race within athletics. Also I like to think I am pretty funny!

What are you passionate about?: Travel, uncomfortable conversations, race, people, laughing, surrounding myself with really good and kind people, helping those who look like me, teaching young women how to advocate for themselves, and helping student-athletes of color.

Why is the representation of scholars of color important to you?: Because we need to see the amazing things scholars of color are doing as most images we see are not of us. My high school volleyball coach was a Black woman and I think of how that representation shaped me playing in college and then coaching. We have to see ourselves in all aspects because we are more than capable and talented.

If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?: Please do! Contact me on all social media- JenFryTalks or email jenfrytalks@gmail.com

Anything else you would like us to know?: If there is a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, you must be the one to write it. -Toni Morrison

I saw that folks in athletics weren’t talking about what I wanted to hear and so I decided to talk about what I wanted to and realized that many people wanted to talk about it as well. Know that what you might want to do hasn’t been done or even thought of and start doing it. Be daring and bold. Remember you will be scared absolutely shitless but do it anyways!!!

Thank you Jen for sharing space with us!

Stay tuned everyone for more Scholars of Color profiles. Interested in being showcased yourself? Please email the Scholars of Color team at scholarsofcolor@reclaimingyourhappiness.com and we will get back to you shortly.
