What is Scholars of Color?

It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

Name: Reyna Zavala

What do you currently do for work and/or school?: I am the creator of SalvadoReina, a fashion brand focused on making the Salvadoran community feel beautiful, represented and empowered. I started the SalvadoReina fashion brand because growing up in the Washington, DC area I was surrounded by people that shared my same culture, but never saw us represented in media.

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: I see myself as a creative and a writer, but I think most people would describe me as an entrepreneur and an artist.

What are you passionate about?: I am passionate about serving the Latino community, in particular the Salvadoran community in the Washington, DC area. I also love writing songs and using my creativity wherever I can; in comedy, music, dance, fashion etc.

Why is the representation of scholars of color important to you?: I believe this outlet is important because it gives people like myself the opportunity to see current youth and future generations feel heard, seen and represented. I did not have many Salvadoran-American creatives I could look up to growing up, but I hope I can inspire other young women in ways I always dreamed of.
